Indian Idol 3 - Idle Indians...

Indian Idol is back

Watching the snapshots of Indian Idol Season-3 today on television, I was left wondering... "What the hell are most of these people thinking?"

Don't get me wrong... of course there are a handful of good talented singers out there.

But what is the vast majority of the crowd out there thinking... worse so what kind of feedback have their friends, parents and well wishers given them. Most of them can't sing a line right... even a stone deaf person can tell that they have no business even singing in their own bathrooms – least of all coming for an audition. Yet there are such characters in hordes' each time, making complete fools of themselves on camera in front of the whole nation.

Are we a nation of hugely delusional people? Or is it a new pass time to prove how stupid you can be to the whole nation? Most of the time, the audition rounds look more like a laughter show than a music talent search... Do these folks really believe that they are 'good' singers… didn't their friends or people at home show them the mirror…? Its actually funnily shocking to see parents and guardians of some of these people get wild when their wards are rejected...Geez!!! smell some coffee.

But then maybe many of them are banking on just being sheer lucky to get a ticket to Mumbai – and then hope that some regional vote bank will catch fancy of them and push their envelope further. It's not impossible – we have seen Qazi Tauqeer get to the top with less than a spoonful of singing talent, or a Sanjay Malakar fight it out for long with just popular vote bank support.

Why does the channel actually show all this to viewers instead of cutting straight to the selected lot? Maybe Sony is indeed fighting the dilemma of combating TRPs of both Star One's Laughter Challenge and Zee's "Music Challenge" at the same time... thereby making the initial rounds of the music search more of a comedy show.

Everyone wants to be famous. And, with the mushrooming of these channels, people think that it is very easy to get five minutes fame. The desire of getting noticed, recognized, admired, etc. etc. is a basic human tendency. What’s wrong in that? Who does not want to try his/her luck when given a chance? Agreed that a lot of people know that they are not cut for a particular profession, but they still want to try their luck. Today, you know about Kaazi or Sanjaya only b’coz you saw them on TV. Otherwise, who would have recognized them? I see no harm in trying your luck. Go ahead; remember that there are so called judges to throw you out. So, why worry????
Now, coming to your second question that why channels show this crap. It is again human psychology. If you keep on showing the serious stuff, you will be bored to death. You will find that each episode of such shows includes a mix of funny as well as serious stuff.

Thanks for visiting and thanks for your comment.

I wish to however clarify one thing... I am not talking of the also-ran's who have just the bare little talent and tons of luck to get through auditions like Qazi or Sanjaya who atleast some recognition - though at cost of a lot of ridicule. I am more amused by those 'shouldnt have even visited the audition venue' people who throng the place and make an absolute fool of themselves. I dont think anyone remembers them... and those who do know them in real life and recognise them on TV would only have a hearty laugh at them all their lives...

Anyway...I guess its a matter of personal choice. If someone loves being the idiot, so be it...

Thanks for your reply.

On a different note,
I would like to mention that I liked your other blogs also because they are based on your personal experiences. These are the situations we face in our day to day life.

Hope to see some other interesting stuff.

Can you write something about your place? I mean, what was the situation that prompted Hindu people to move from their place? Have read and heard a lot on TV, magazines, books etc...but never got an opportunity to know from someone from that region.
